The role-playing genre in PC games has been popular since the original text based games of the late 1980s. However it wasn’t until the release of Diablo by Blizzard in 1996 that RPGs began appealing to a much larger audience and became huge money makers.
An RPG with a great story provides excellent value for money. Most RPGs have hundreds of hours of content and then plenty more hours available via online multiplayer gameplay. This, in comparison to some FPS games that can be completed in around 10 hours and then have very limited online gameplay, is a huge difference.
Without a doubt RPG games have effected the way that FPS and RTS games have been developed today. Most other genres have began to include elements from RPGs such as leveling up and character development to compete with the role-playing market.
RPGs also provide the gamer with a greater attachment to the main character. As the character levels up during the game, the player can choose new skills and attributes to customize the character to their favourite playing style. RPG games (like the Fallout games and Elder Scrolls games) also often involve the gamer making critical decisions throughout the game which can effect NPC reactions to you later in the game.
